Setting It To Music

I know some people like to write while their favorite music is playing, and others prefer silence. I am a silence individual myself but there are special cases.
For example, If the children are home and making a racket, music through headphones is a excellent way to isolate myself for an hour or two. I do not mean I wander round the house 24/7 in a musical daze, but if I need a couple of quiet hours of writing time to finish off my word count this is the way to get it.
Second, if I am writing an important scene I find the right music could really help to session my own mood, and for that reason the mood of the piece I am writing.
And that is really the reason for this blog post.
You see, although you could listen to music while writing, how carefully do you choose the pieces? I use my own yPlay software which allows 100 named playlists, but anything else with similar features should do. And here’s what you need: a playlist for each mood and style of writing. Have a Romance playlist with gentle love songs, an Action playlist with heavy drumming and wild electric guitars, perhaps a Classical playlist for a bit of culture – something to listen to while you’re writing about a visit to a posh hotel or restaurant, forexample.
What you do not want to do is have one playlist with all your faves mixed up. It is truly hard to write a touching romantic scene when heavy metal is hammering your ears one minute and Cliff Richard is going on about his walking talking doll the next.

Pop Music

What is ‘pop music?’ Where did this distinction arise and what is it’s purpose? If it has a purpose, who does it serve?
On close examination, you see that it’s the way society absorbs a thing; the way the tiger is defanged. It is another useful illusion from society’s toolbox of illusions. All through my school years, I had to put up with this prattle about ‘ meaningful music,’ and ‘pop music.’ Oh sure, I bought into it a bit, at 1st. But one only has to question the status quo.
1st of all,  we  all know what it means, this business of ‘pop music’ and ‘ meaningful music.’ It depends a lot on what side of the fence you’re sitting on, of course. If you’re a ‘ meaningful musician,’ ‘ meaningful music’ is ‘ nice,’ and ‘pop’ music is ‘bad.’ Of course  we  all know that ‘ meaningful music’ will make you no resources. Why? Because it’s ‘ nice,’ of course, and the majority of people do not know about ‘ nice.’ They only pay for music that is ‘bad.’
Now to be fair, if you’re on the other side of this specific fence, ‘ meaningful music’ is ‘boring,’ ( that is bad) and pop music is ‘cool.’ ( That is ‘ nice ‘). Furthermore, this historically speaking, has tended to be ‘radical’ and ‘revolutionary.’
‘Serious music?’ Part of the establishment.
It is important to reflect on the political demographics implied by these distinctions in music. They are fairly obvious, when you prevent to contemplate it, but it’s exciting that most people toss these distinctions about in the absence of a second thought. From these two easy musical types, you could freely build up profiles of the listener’s politics, religion, average income and so on and so on. people do plot these demographics. Not the audiences, but the people who are in the business of sales and marketing.
Nonetheless, as you could suspect, all these demographics are bound and held in place by belief systems that are spun on half truths, exaggeration and out right fantasy.
Even ‘ meaningful ‘ musicians have allowed themselves to be saddled with ridiculous myths and caricature profiles of past composers, much to their own detriment and decline of the tradition. Most of these folks, who should know better, have been content with whatever historical spin has been handed down.
This kind of thinking has drained the important ity out of the tradition. Take just the idea that composers like Beethoven and Mozart were not actually popular until after their death. Th isn’t ion has bred a mentality that has said whatever it creates is too nice for present day audiencess and it must constant ly create for some, undefined, superior future audiences. This furthermore conveniently isolates it from any criticism of what’s going on.
In point of fact, Beethoven has been acknowledged as the biggest living composer in his own lifetime. The city of Vienna, an historically important center of culture in Europe, paid the man to live there. As far as being ‘radical’ or ‘revolutionary,’ well, let’s see;  we  have Beethoven dedicating his third symphony to the leader of the French Revolution.  we  have Hector Berlioz composing an enduring masterpiece while stoned on opium.
We have premiers of famous classical works like Bolero and the Rite of Spring that were either banned or caused a riot. This list goes on and on.
And what of this hoary chestnut that states pop music is a lesser discipline? Anyone with a musical ear could tell you that there’s been plenty of excellent ‘pop music.’ And why not? a lot of of these musician s, like Elton John, went to music school. They’re ‘ meaningful musician s.’ So why this excellent deceit? The most obvious suspect is the music business, but it’s obvious by now, that they have no idea what  they are  doing either.
No, the deeper reality is that, as long as there has been a culture in the western hemisphere, there has been a counter culture. All this business of counter culture, that supposedly began in the sixties, didn’t.
How far back does it go? Well. Richard Wagner, in his early days, has been part of a free love movement in Ger a lot of and his 1st opera has been called ‘Forbidden Love,’ and it has nothing to do with rings of power or Teutonic nymphs.
It is an opera that Wagner, later in his life, professed that he would like to forget about, and, well, we’re just not going to let him. I will deal with culture and its twin, counter culture in subsequent articles.

Music is a meaningful subject. Good music has a hardwired direct line to our souls. Music could bypass the analytical aspects of our humanity and dig deep right into the emotional core of our truly being. Live music is even more compelling. Live music is the creative expression of the soul made manifest. This is a precious luxury that makes people feel benefit d and valuable. It makes us feel human. furthermore, it’s fun to dance to.
Here are some really excellent reasons for booking live acts when you next organize a social gathering such as a wedding or gathering.
Live acts are more exciting than recorded music. The truth is that no matter how nice a musical recording can be, every time you play it you will hear exactly the same thing. Music is so complex and subtle, that only ever hearing the same version of a song is limiting to the listener. But when a live performer play a song, they play it slightly divergent ly each time they perform. The result is tension, excitement and the frisson that the ‘unknown’ creates for the listener. These are more versatile. While these days disc jockeys carry thousands of songs on digital discs, only live musicians could alter the mood in the room, second by second, in response to the audiences reaction.
Live music is more inclusive. people could feel much more a part of a live music gathering than is possible when listening to recorded music. The interactions betwixt performer members and audiences are far more versatile and inclusive. It is generally better for the economy. Yes, it is. When  we  buy a CD  the resources goes to multinational record organizations who take their cut. When you hire a local/regional band, the resources  we  spend on them is far more like ly to stay in the community.
” At times you could find you get what you need” sang Mick Jagger and while you could want to hear a specific song RIGHT NOW, the performer could not know it. This is true, but the performer are experienced at finding the right song to play depending on the audiences mood and reaction. So let the performer lead you from the safe and pedestrian to new pastures of pleasure.
Whether it’s your wedding, gathering, company gathering or special occasion, After Dark Entertainments have the entertainment for you.

The Power Of Music

Have you ever thought about the power of music and the influential role it has had in the world? It seems that ever since the beginning of time, human beings have been expressing themselves, in one way or another, with musical instruments, dance and song. This medium has furthermore been one of the primary ways for a lot of cultures to preserve their history for the next generation.
It is easy to recognize that feelings are an important part of the whole picture. people make music when they are happy, angry, sad, hungry, in love, at war, at peace, searching… just about every emotion or experience could create a creative spark! And the power of music could have either a positive or negative influence in our lives. It could motivate us to take action, whether it be for nice or bad.
In 2005, my husband, James, and I had the occasion to have two of our songs used in a film documentary about Hurricane Katrina. This is just one small example of how the power of music can be used as a force for nice. As songwriters,  we  consider this unique experience to be one of the highlights we’ve shared together as a married couple.
Lately I’ve been thinking about other ways to use the power of music for nice. Recently I met with a man who had just returned from Myanmar (Burma). As some of you could know, the people in this area have been suffering extreme loss and hardship since the cyclone hit final could and there is a excellent need for food, clothing and medical supplies. Some predictions have indicated that there could be as a lot of as 60,000-80,000 orphans as a result of the storm.
James and I are currently making travel arrangements to visit Myranmar next January. Until then, I am hoping that the power of this music article will draw some attention to the situation.

Traveling With Music

All true music lovers will know that access to music isn’t a luxury but a necessity. When you travel, the availability of your preferred songs become even more important. like food and water, music becomes a need. Regardless of the way in which you travel, music always adds benefit and enjoyment to your trip. You can be traveling by bus, train, car or motorbike in your own country – with the right music, it’s always better.
On a foreign visit, the presence of music enriches your travels even more. Listening to familiar music while discovering exciting new places transform the experience into something magical. songs that you could have listened to hundreds of times before add beauty and unique memories to a vacation. They become the soundtrack of your trip. After the holiday, you listen to the same songs again. Immediately it carries you back to the scene where you had listened to the music while traveling. You experience the place again and remember what you had seen, whom you had met, what you were talking about and how you felt. The music gave your journey meaning.
One of the biggest mistakes I made during my 1st trip abroad has been not to take music with me. Even in those days, at the end of ’92, flights from South Africa to Europe were not cheap. I borrowed an old backpack from a friend. could be ‘ancient’ is a better word to use, since the pack still had a frame on the outside. Nonetheless, budget limitations did not allow me to buy a fancy and light new rucksack. My flight has been scheduled to leave Johannesburg International Airport on 25 November. It meant that I would arrive in England at the same time the season would finally don the cold coat of late autumn. That knowledge motivated me to buy a new sleeping bag. I decided to use my old hiking boots since the little bit of resources I had left I wanted to keep for surviving the European winter. Knowing that my trip would only be for three months I reasoned that I would not need music. If only I had listened to my heart and not my mind. Nonetheless, once again, the shortage of resources did not allow me the luxury of buying a new Walkman.
Not long after the start of my trip, I realized what a mistake I had made to leave my music at home. I coped in the absence of music for six weeks. How I final ed that long still remains a mystery to me. Then, in Gdansk in Poland, I could no longer ignore the need for music. I bought a small portable radio and tape player. Tapes were cheap. I stocked up on a dozen tapes, from U2 and Marillion to the Doors and the Rolling Stones. Even though the quality of the radio’s one speaker has been poor, it sounded like the perfect hi-fidelity sound I had heard up to that point in my life.
I did learn my lesson during that trip. Since then I’ve never traveled in the absence of music. I’ve furthermore promised myself that I never will. Furthermore, today, as opposed to those days, you do not need much space to take music with you whenever you go. With mp3 players, you could take all your preferred albums along. You could even make your own compilations and have your individual soundtrack ready for the journey. So, do not wait, just go.

Live music is sometimes called the food of the soul. There’s nothing more persuasive and pleasing than nice music. Soothing music repairs the mind. No entertainment is complete in the absence of music. Performing of your preferred music and songs instantly varys your tension filled mind to a more relaxed and serene state of mind.
Though people could listen to songs and music on stereo systems and walkmans, however, they do not think twice before lining up for Live Music Performancess the reason passion. It is the power of passion that attracts them to see the stars perform in individual and live. nothing beats it.
Live music is furthermore favored at get togethers. Live music entertainment consists of classical music, Jazz, Swing, World music, period music of 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and the 90’s and performed by musicians who haven’t made it big. Classical music consists of quintet, quartet, trio, duo and solo. shows of live music can be given on any instrument as a piano, guitar, keyboard, harpoon, flute, trumpet, saxophone and the jazz session.
Whether it’s a birthday gathering, wedding party, a private gathering or a company gathering, live music is a must if you’re not engaging a disc jockey to mix songs for you. Even If the re is a disc jockey, live music isn’t a bad idea. Almost every city and town in the United States has bands that perform live music. The choice of songs and music can be limited with a Live Music Performances, but it’s the limited selected songs and music, which makes the performer endearing to people. disc jockeys would charge 25  percent? 50  percent of what a live music performing performer charges.
Nonetheless, the allure of live music is something that is inescapable if one could give it. Some live music performing bands gain and reproduce the tone of music that were not recorded the right way by the unsophisticated recording machines of the 50?s and the 60?s.
A disc jockey could mix songs to offer you the very highest quality  music entertainment. Do you like to listen to live music? When you think of live music what do you think of? Do you think of going to a very large stadium or performance hall and standing with thousands of other screaming audiences while your preferred performer or performer plays song after song? This is the type of experience that a lot of people prefer when they contemplate “live music.” But, with the technology  we  have available today, it’s possible to have a similar experience in your home every day.
It has been decades since the 1st Live Music shows has been expansive cast over cable TV. This is a way that not just thousands but millions of viewers all over the country and even the world can be part of a live performance taking place in New York(NY) City, London, or even Tokyo. The TVs and stereo systems that  we  have today far outshine those of the past, and you could really feel like you’re right there at the live music Club even if you’re sitting in your living room or den. You could watch whatever you want to watch, eat whatever you want, and turn it up as loud as you want. Then, you could record it and watch it again later.
The Internet is furthermore a excellent resource for live music downloads. Nonetheless, the term “live” in this case can be deceiving. At times you could listen to actual music that is live, but for the most part the live shows you will find on the Internet are recorded previously. They are not, however, the same recordings that you will buy on a CD. The music and the shows are unedited and raw. a lot of websites now offer free downloads so if this is your type of music experience you could put it on your MP3 player and go.
If you still prefer being at the Club for the live performance, but you can’t afford to spend a fortune, check out some of the local/regional bands-you could hear samples from some of them On-line at websites like MySpace.com music.
The opportunities are there for the taking.

Live Music: It’s Dying?

We spent months planning for the Gemini Soul tour, booking shows in Phoenix, Hollywood, Fresno, Santa Cruz and Orange County.  we  covered it all: a publicist, advertising, free ticket give-aways, flyers, posters, performance listings, postcards.  we  tried holding a charity benefit.  we  tried having an occasion band.  we  tried free promotional shows at colleges.  we  tried passing out free admission cards on the street. And still only a scattering of people came to each show.
The people who did show up always raved about the music, as did the doormen, the bartenders, the club managers. ” You are the perfect performer I’ve ever seen play here, and I’ve heard a lot of bands,” has been a typical response. So where has been everyone?
Live music in the United States is dying. Several decades ago, a performer could count on regular club dates. Unknown jazz bands could “do the circuit” and make at least some resources. Not anymore. I talked to the manager of a two-thousand seat theater. She said anyone in the industry is talking about how difficult it has become to fill Club s, and speculated that people have a lot of entertainment choices at home — the Internet, iPods, cable TV, Netflix — that there is less incentive to go out on the town. Fewer people are willing to take a occasion on unknown music. As a consequence, a lot of Clubs can’t afford to pay bands and expect you to play for ideas — which is fine to get a career going, but how could you sustain that?
Live music as viable entertainment hangs on in some ways. Me’Shell Ndegeocello, thank goodness, could draw a large crowd on a Monday night to San Francisco’s The Independent. Festivals and cruises still feature performers (although they are increasingly interested in musicians with national reputations – which begs the question, how does one get a national reputation?). But if skill ed guitarists like Mick Fleetwood (co-founder of one of the most successful bands of all time, Fleetwood Mac) could fill only half of that two-thousand seat Club, and if Yoshi’s resorts to giving away free tickets to Lee Ritenour’s second show, where does that leave us?
Have  we  become too accustomed to music at the press of a button, day and night, and worse yet, a lot of of us now expect it for free? Radiohead released their latest CD  On-line and asked buyers to choose how much to pay. Only 38  percent of those who downloaded the CD  paid anything. The rest — an unbelievable 62  percent — felt they should get the album for free! [Forbes.com] Because of the band’s stature, they still made a considerable amount of resources on the sales, but at those percentages, a four-person performer selling only 10,000 CDs at an average of $8 apiece would make just $30,400. That amounts to less than $8,000 per individual, not including any deduction for production costs.
I recently located a dozen inter-connected English-language websites based in Russia selling my music as well as music by big-name musician s, unauthorized, for download for less than $1 per CD. If most musicians can’t make resources performing and can’t even make resources from CD  sales On-line, how will our culture be able to nurture and sustain the next wave of musician s? like climate vary,  we  will glibly go about thinking nothing is wrong (or at least a lot of of us will) until it’s too late.  we  will have chopped down the tree that nurtured our music and gave it life.

Around the pubs and clubs in the United Kingdom there are still a lot of bands playing for only several pounds to demanding audiencess who at the same time request Chuck Berry and the Arctic Monkeys. Keeping all these divergent people in the audiences happy is never easy, but not impossible either. With nice stage craft and clever of songs at a specific Club, a nice performer could make anyone happy.
The organization of these bands is extraordinary. They must find like minded musicians that are committed. Then they must find somewhere to practice. This isn’t easy as most can’t do this at home. If you’re fortunate to have a house large enough, it’s un like ly you could get round the neighbours, as it’s so loud! It can’t be turned down as everything must be as loud as the drums. A performer generally hires a room to practice, at excellent fee to themselves.
A performer must furthermore spend literally thousands on equipment. PA, lighting, guitars, drums etc.
The next hurdle is transport. For some reason most drummers can’t drive! Cars are generally inadequate as you would need a fleet of about 5 for your gig, truly expensive on the fuel, and impractical. Most bands have to hire or buy a van, again at excellent fee to themselves.
When they have finally rehearsed all there material over weeks or months, they are ready to play live. It is an exciting day, one of wonder, excitement and slight fear. You turn up to the Club to find one man and his dog. And that man is truly drunk, wants to be your manager, and giving you all the benefit of his ‘wisdom’ in the music game! The landlord is furthermore drunk, and you can’t work out if he likes you or not.
You get poorly paid, if you get paid at all, and return home generally out of pocket.
Nonetheless the real rock heroes come back for more. They find the perfect Club s, gain a reputation, and play at some excellent places. Sure they still have bad shows, but the nice ones make up for it. They make it look so easy, but it isn’t.
The Half Monty have had there share of ups and downs. They have been ripped of at shows, played in the most dodgy Club s, and heckled to death. But they are still here, bigger and better than ever having learnt from their early days.
So remember, when you see a local/regional performer advertised at a pub or club, go see them and help them. It isn’t easy for the lads and lasses. Perhaps buy them a beer after the gig if you really enjoyed it. , for these are the true heroes of rock.
